The Colorado Rockies played there first game in 1993, as an expansion
team who was joined that year by the Florida Marlins. The Rockies
played their first 2 years at Mile High Stadium, setting all kinds
of baseball attendance records in the Major Leagues and drawing amazing
baseball crowds. Two years later Coors Field was built in Lower Downtown
completely rejuvenating the area into what it is today.
The Rockies first year at Coors was incredible. Going 77-67, the Rockies
had the best winning percentage of any third year team ever. Not only
that, the Rockies made the playoffs as the first ever NL wild card
team. This was hands down, the quickest an expansion team had ever
made the playoffs. The Rockies did not fare well in the playoffs that
year, the Atlanta Braves won the best-of 5 series in 4 games. That
year the term 'Blake Street Bombers' was coined. The 4 bombers; Castilla,
Walker, Bichette and Galarraga all hit over 30 hrs that year in the
rare air of Coors Field.
The Rockies have never been the same since that year. 1995 was the
lone playoff year to this point for the Rockies. The Rockies no longer
sell out every game even when they are bad. They are starting to have
to earn the fans, instead of them being a given. The Rockies, still
a young franchise in baseball years, is still going through some growing
pains, but have established themselves as a mature franchise.
Coors Field is an excellent place to watch a baseball game. Coors
has all the baseball amenities including; fountains, a micro-brewery
in right field, an open walkway in left field and cup holders for
your beer. There truly isn't a bad seat in the stadium and some of
the best views of the field, from left field, can be purchased cheap.
Straight away center, deemed the Rock-Pile, only sells tickets on
game day and they are only $5 per ticket.
