Colorado Springs is a thriving community with tourism, high technology,
manufacturing, aerospace, sports and the military ranking as key industries
within the economy. According to the Census Bureau, Colorado Springs is
the 18th-fastest-growing city and the 80th-biggest city in the United
States. Although recently passing the 500,000-people mark, it is still
a place where the people are friendly and the pace is more relaxed than
in a major metropolitan area.
Companies manufacturing technologically advanced products started to move
to the area as early as 1960. In the 1980s, a wave of semiconductor makers
and software companies began converging on the area, and Colorado Springs
got its nickname, Silicon Mountain. This growing number of high-tech firms
accelerated through the 1990s and the state of Colorado is now second
only to California in the number of residents working in technology-oriented
careers. Today, the area has more than 350 high-tech companies employing
about 12,000 software programmers. with more on the way. Some of the major
technological employers include; Intel, Hewlett Packard,Compaq,Oracle
Corp.,ASI Technologies, Allied Signal, Lockheed Martin, MCI-Worldcom,Federal
Express Data Systems, Gateway 2000,
Colorado Springs has an abundance of healthcare facilities to help keep
its residents in top shape. Vigorous competition between major healthcare
providers has kept the standard of care and the level of technology high.
The region's steady growth has also attracted many new providers, including
hospitals specializing in rehabilitation, women's medicine and free-standing
