Colorado Springs is a thriving community with tourism, high technology, manufacturing, aerospace, sports and the military ranking as key industries within the economy. According to the Census Bureau, Colorado Springs is the 18th-fastest-growing city and the 80th-biggest city in the United States. Although recently passing the 500,000-people mark, it is still a place where the people are friendly and the pace is more relaxed than in a major metropolitan area.

Companies manufacturing technologically advanced products started to move to the area as early as 1960. In the 1980s, a wave of semiconductor makers and software companies began converging on the area, and Colorado Springs got its nickname, Silicon Mountain. This growing number of high-tech firms accelerated through the 1990s and the state of Colorado is now second only to California in the number of residents working in technology-oriented careers.
